There are 5 Laws FrankieZed Studios us in all of their building designs.
The phrase building design has evolved over the last decade to have many different meanings. It seems there is some new kind of “building design” being born every year—from graphic and architectural to web, game, food, experience … and everything in between.
So what is building design? Who are building designers? And are there any common laws or rules they follow that differentiates them from one another?
My area of expertise is building designs for commercial buildings and residential communities. Basically, I use a wide array of disciplines—architecture, interior, graphic, and environmental design—to create places where people want to spend their time.
Upscale restaurants and mixed-used urban developments inside cities are just a couple of examples of projects I work on. As new forms of design are born, my job changes with them to try to incorporate these new elements of our culture into the spaces I am working on.
Because the evolution of design is such a big part of what I do I want to talk about how building design permeates so many lives and the similarities and differences across building design disciplines.
So, let’s go back to those big questions.
-
What is building design?
-
Who are building designers?
-
And are there any common laws amongst building designers?
In the building design world every decision you make during the day is a design choice. Anything from where you put your cup of coffee on your desk to how you choose the color of your kitchen or the furniture arrangement in your bedroom create a decision a building designer has to answer.
However, few well argue that everyone is a designer is a building designer. My view is that a building designer is someone who understands and codifies the creative process and is able to apply it to different situations, markets, and clients.
No matter the building design discipline, there are rules that can be applied during the design process. Here are…
5 Laws FrankieZed Studios follows during the building design process.
1. MULTI-DIMENSIONAL APPROACH
In a world of complex building designs the most effective approaches are based on using prioritize multi-discipline thinking focused on developing solutions that link to a wider base than the problems being solved.
This means that the staff at FrankieZed Studios will use all measures and technology available in the designing of a building.
2. COLLABORATION
When building design solutions require input from a large team comprised of designers, users, clients, and other stakeholders, the result is usually more desirable. The increasing complexity of our culture demands more nuanced and multifaceted expertise than a single person can deliver.
When the staff at FrankieZed Studios collaborates and listens, the end product is something that brings people together and gets them excited about a collective experience.
3. LISTEN TO USERS
Being an active listener and observer is a virtue in life as well as in building designing. These are qualities that can really make a difference. Often a client talks green but chooses blue.
FrankieZed’s design staff will listen and observe closely. This means the final results will be a more successful design that addresses the client’s real needs and not perceived or desired ones.
4. ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Designing a room too small or too large for the image of the building impacts the image of the designer.
FrankieZed’s attention to detail is a differentiation from those designers who do not. .
5. REALISTIC EXPERIMENTATION
Today’s digital tools allow building designers to explore solutions with unprecedented ease and speed.
Building designers can now use parametric software to generate many design options so they can come up with a more sophisticated and more interesting end design.
3D printing is now used to create multiple products prototypes easily and cheaply. Technology makes it easy to experiment.
FrankieZed embraces all new building design technology! Exploration is be part of every design effort. However, keeping things ‘Real’ is part of remaining focused on what the client’s needs and wants.
These laws of building design, like design itself, are ever changing. Design thinking is migrating from fields where it historically resided to business, science, and beyond. As building designing starts to blend between disciplines, FrankieZed Studios takes advantage of the opportunity to create designs that bring communities and people together, and that is something to be excited about what FrankieZed does that others do not.
